So many incredible artists have come from South Carolina. This week within each class we will take the time to focus on one of the below. I encourage each of you to go beyond and look at the focus artist in other grade levels. There is so much to learn and be inspired by. Philip Simmons

In order to understand the man, the meaning, power, and passion of the city of Charleston, you must first pass through the gates of the “Holy City.” These gates are not just architectural, they are not just a thing of beauty, they are an entry to the story of a city and of a man.

(June 9, 1912 – June 22, 2009) was an American artisan and blacksmith specializing in the craft of ironwork.
If you get the chance...you can visit his home and workshop in Charleston. I had a chance to go and it was an amazing experience!

Watch these short videos to learn more about the amazing life, work and impact Philip Simmons not only had on Charleston but on the world.
“Philip Simmons is a poet of ironwork. His ability to endow raw iron with pure lyricism is known and admired throughout, not only in South Carolina but as evidenced by his many honors and awards, he is recognized in all of America.”
