In order to understand the man, the meaning, power, and passion of the city of Charleston, you must first pass through the gates of the “Holy City.” These gates are not just architectural, they are not just a thing of beauty, they are an entry to the story of a city and of a man. Passing through the Gateway to the city, I experienced a journey through the history and culture of not only Charleston but of the history of the United States. I was exposed to the community, culture and the arts of generations from past and present and what I found was an expected path tracing the footprints that lead me to find Philip Simmons.
